One of the best films in the last twenty years was American Beauty. This emotionally charged drama won 5 Oscars in 2000. The big star Kevin Spacey also won an Oscar for his starring role.
American Beauty is a story about mid-life crisis and people coming to terms with who they are. It is centered on a married couple with a teenage daughter. We follow the struggles they all go through in coming to grips with the various issues each has in their lives.
Kevin Spacey plays the father Lester, and he is going through a mid-life crisis. He hates his job, his family hates him, and he is simply bored with life. His wife Carolyn is always criticizing him, and his teenage daughter Jane is rebelling against her parents. She is disgusted by how they behave.
Carolyn, who is quite the bitch, is straying from the marriage and is dissatisfied with Lester in every way. She has her own career in real estate and is a very materialistic and career driven woman. She is having an affair with a successful and married real estate man who promises to help her with her career.
Jane, their daughter, is rebelling from the fighting couple and trying to "find herself". Her best friend is a high school hottie who everyone is after, but Jane feels unsure of herself. Even her dad has the hots for her best friend.
Eventually Lester "loses it" at work and quits his job. He gets a good severance pay because he knows some bad things the company has done. He leaves his job and finds work at a fast food place. He also starts working out, and smoking marijuana too.
Jane meets a boy she likes. Ricky is new in the neighborhood and has his own family problems, but he and Jane find they are falling in love. Ricky is also becoming friends with Lester because he is selling dope to him.
I won't give away how things turn out so you will be able to enjoy watching the movie. This movie is a must see and the acting is simply outstanding. American Beauty is one of the new classics.
