What is your reason for wanting to learn to play the electric guitar? I bet I could guess. You want to learn because of the awesome feeling you get impressing other people by rocking out to some of your favorite songs!
It is an amazing feeling when it all comes together and you start to play actual music. And the rush you get strumming some songs is like nothing you have ever experienced.
If you are like I was, you want to know how to learn to play the electric guitar As fast as possible. Here are 3 ways the Guitar Gods did it:
1. Learn the basic chords - I know for a fact that this is boring, BUT, it is essential. There is no question you have to learn the basic chords if you want to learn to play the electric guitar. When I first started, I bought a book and used it to learn the chords. HUGE mistake - learning chords by reading a book was absolutely horrible because I had no visual reference, just some pictures of chords. I had no idea if my fingers were positioned correctly or the sound was right. Do like I did and get yourself a DVD or an online guitar video course so you can see from a professional how to do it. You'll learn so much faster.
2. Practice, practice, practice - I am sure people tell you this all the time, "if you want to learn to play the electric guitar, you have to practice!" And practicing is kind of boring, but it's not this simple my friend. Do you really think Joe Satriani, Angus Young or Eddie Van Halen just picked up the guitar one day and started playing like they do now? Uh, I don't think so. It is essential that if you want to learn to play the electric guitar you practice each and every day to get the chords right and the fingers positioned correctly. The more you practice, the better you will get.
3. Play along with songs - once you get the basic chords down and you practice to where you can move from one chord to the next fluidly, start playing along with your favorite songs. Get some jam tracks to play along with. By doing so, 1) you will get better and better, and 2) you will have a heck of a lot more fun. You will actually start to learn to play the electric guitar at an accelerated pace once you start jamming along to some songs.
After you master these 3 things, you can move on to more advanced techniques like hammer-ons, pull-offs and bending or you can learn some picking techniques and speed drills to get that fluid, rocking sound.
