It is quite familiar to hear people talking about past lives. This is a phenomenon which depicts that human soul is immortal and passes on from one physical body to another. The concepts or rebirth and reincarnation are ancient as well as popular.
When somebody is talking about past lives, it is usually meant that there has been a number of past lives and births before the present status. One can be reborn in different types of physical bodies, or actually be reincarnated. From times immemorial, the ancient civilizations and cultures that are much more advanced spiritually has been researching about past lives and the characteristics of the human soul.
About past lives, or about reincarnation, it can be said that the human soul is believed to be immortal in nature. Thus, when a person dies or his physical body ceases to exist, the soul leaves the same and thereafter comes back to the Earth in a new born baby. This phenomenon is commonly known as reincarnation or also transmigration of the soul.
Various ancient civilizations and spiritually advanced religions believed in reincarnation and researched or experimented about past lives in their own ways. The concept of rebirth can be said to be the central tenet of religions such as Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism, ancient Greek philosophy, etc while major sects of Christianity and Islam differ in views.
The Hindus believe that the soul has to travel to a cycle of birth and rebirth which is called samsara. This continues till the soul attains nirvana or the highest level of spiritual wisdom. During the process of birth and rebirth the life it leads, the work it does are termed as karma.
The karma determines the condition and the experience the soul go through in the next rebirth. With every rebirth the soul comes closer to attaining the state of moksha or nirvana. When finally it attains nirvana the soul is set free and attains the much awaited eternal peace and happiness.
Buddhism on the other hand talks about past lives not in the context of the immortality of the soul, but rather on reincarnation being on a stream of consciousness. Thus, there is not the supreme atman or soul that ties one life to another, instead it talks about past lives as evolvement of consciousness, emergence of a new personality from the same stream of consciousness.
Coming to the modern west, it is seen that there is no beliefs existing about past lives as such. The philosophy which has emerged in the recent past talking about past lives and believing the Hindu line of thought is that of Theosophy. Theosophy is thus the first institution to talk about past lives in the modern western world.
This doctrine believes that the soul is a formless, all pervasive force which descends from ethereal planes to the world through the rhythmic process of birth, death and rebirth in order to know itself. After it has expressed itself and gained experience from a birth, it attains purity in death and ascends to the sublime planes once again. After it has cleansed off itself from the personal experiences thereof, it once again waits in its timeless, formless self to be reincarnated into the rhythmic manifestation towards increased self expression.
