Many people do not understand what all the fuss is about in the media when they keep referring to HD TV or what it actually means. To many they know it will be a better picture and much brighter colors than the older televisions could produce.

There are said to be five times as many pixels in the high definition picture compared to the standard pictures on standard sets. Flat screen sets such as Plasma and LCD are the recommended types for showing HD programs, the pictures are clear and sharp. If surround sound has been used in the making of program it feels just like being at the cinema with sound reaching from all round.

Not everyone is a technical genius about how televisions work. But it is important to note that when suppliers advertise that a set is HD Ready, it does not mean that it will show HD programs. The set has to be attached to an HD box before it can be used to watch the HD programs. But is it really necessary for everyone who wants to buy a TV to understand all the technical bits?

In addition to being able to choose a television from a wide range of well know manufacturers, there are numerous suppliers advertising that their HD box is best. So checking out the reviews and comparing prices and contracts before signing up is crucial if the aim is to get the best service possible for the best price possible.

Package deals offering free HD set top box and possibly other things such as a DVD player, home cinemas system or a tv stand with a television set, can be good deals. But always take time to work out what buying the items individually would cost to see if it is a good deal, and then only go ahead if you really want the addition free items.

Many of the larger stores have their own technical department, where customers can go for expert advice and a straightforward explanation of all the technical jargon. If the technical expert cannot explain in plain English, its probably because they have learned the technical write up word by word and have no more idea about what it all means than yourself.

Its sometimes better to take along a friend or relative who has a bit more technical know how about HD TV. The young ones nowadays understand the tech stuff better than us. Decide which television is to be bought and what the maximum price will be, then let your young tech person get on with it.
